{"id":1049,"date":"2011-11-02T20:12:04","date_gmt":"2011-11-03T02:12:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rodeoclassifieds.com\/blog\/?p=1049"},"modified":"2011-11-02T20:12:04","modified_gmt":"2011-11-03T02:12:04","slug":"maxine-mckenna-wins-the-ladies-barrel-racing-at-the-2011-chinook-rodeo-finals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rodeoclassifieds.com\/blog\/maxine-mckenna-wins-the-ladies-barrel-racing-at-the-2011-chinook-rodeo-finals\/","title":{"rendered":"Maxine McKenna wins the Ladies Barrel Racing at the 2011 Chinook Rodeo Finals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Maxine McKenna and her horse Rocky are the newly crowned Ladies Barrel Racing Champs at the 2011 Chinook Rodeo Association Finals.\u00a0 The CRA Finals were held in Taber, AB on October 21-23, 2011.\u00a0 Maxine placed 2nd in all three of the rounds, also making her end up 2nd in the average.\u00a0 After the three go&#8217;s there ended up being a tie between Maxine and Bobbie Goodwin resulting in a run off!\u00a0 Maxine and Bobbie flipped a coin to see who ran first and the committee was even gracious to rake before Bobbie.\u00a0 When the run off was all said and done, Maxine and Rocky ended up taking home the championship.\u00a0 For a complete look at all of the results from the finals you can go <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinookrodeoassociation.com\/Finals%202011%20Results.htm\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 It was a really tight barrel race with only 0.18 between first and fourth in the average.<\/p>\n<p>We recently had the chance to talk with Maxine, here is what she had to say:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">-What is the name of the horse you ran?<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1050\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rodeoclassifieds.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Rocky-ped.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1050\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1050\" title=\"Rockin Down Dash Pedigree\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rodeoclassifieds.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Rocky-ped-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.rodeoclassifieds.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Rocky-ped-300x180.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.rodeoclassifieds.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Rocky-ped.jpg 819w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1050\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rocky`s Pedigree - click to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Rockin Down Dash aka Rocky<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">-How old is she?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>9<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">-How long have you been running barrels on her?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Five years<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">-What is the training background on this horse?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Marlon Draper and I trained her on the track as a two and three year old, and then I took her straight into barrel training, November of her 3 year old year to get her ready to barrel futurity as a 4 year old.\u00a0 Rocky and I have a real unique bond that a lot of people don&#8217;t understand.\u00a0 She can be very fractious when she&#8217;s pumped.\u00a0 I used to pony, gallop, and work her at the race track, so it was real frustrating for me to turn her over to the jockeys to ride her in the races, because they didn&#8217;t understand her like I did.\u00a0 When I got her to myself to train for barrels, she took to it quickly, and she ended up Canadian Reserve Barrel Futurity Champion, and Runner-Up Canadian Derby Champion at age five and six.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">-What is your training and riding style with Rocky?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rocky is just kind of an unorthodox style, and attitude.\u00a0 She&#8217;s definitely what people call &#8220;a free runner&#8221;, so I just kind of let her do her funky stuff.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">-What is it you like best about Rocky?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I like how she stays so soft, after we get her down the alley, and that she is such a sweetheart to be around.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">-How did you feel your runs were at the Chinook Finals?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>She ran so consistent, despite the ground conditions.\u00a0 She tried so hard every run.\u00a0 All of her runs were within a tenth of a second (even the run off).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">-How do you prepare for your runs (warm up etc.)?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t spend too much time warming up, 10-15 minutes.\u00a0 I want some horse left for the race.\u00a0 We do stretches though, the both of us, important for gals our age!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">-What kind of saddle do you use?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Shiloh Contender, custom made.\u00a0 ALL leather<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">-What kind of pad do you use?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Felt or wool, 3\/4&#8243; NO synthetics, nothing fancy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">-What kind of bit do you use?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On small patterns I use\u00a0 a short shank combination, what I call the upside-down bit.\u00a0 On big patterns &#8211; the Merrill, swivel mouth piece.\u00a0 Rocky absolutely needs a tie-down (loose).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">-Are there any specific goals you have set for yourself and your horse this season?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I really wanted Rocky to win the Chinook Finals this year, because she was so close last year and ended up second.\u00a0 All through her career she&#8217;s always been the bridesmaid and never the bride, although she tries so darn hard.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">-What lead you to be a barrel racer?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Been doing it off and on as long as I can remember.\u00a0 Wanted to get into cutting, but my parents couldn&#8217;t afford it.\u00a0 Barrels were cheaper than cutting cattle.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">-If you were to share a training\/rodeo tip what would it be?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t complicate things for you or your horse.\u00a0 Set simple, clear-cut, short-term goals.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In Maxine&#8217;s words:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8220;It was so fun and exciting to have a run-off with Bobbie Goodwin.\u00a0 What a great competitor and horse woman!\u00a0 Congrats to Bailey Hughson for her outstanding year, and gracious attitude!\u00a0 And to all the other finalists (Juniors and Little Rascals too), you girls ROCK!\u00a0 So fun to watch you all!\u00a0 Thanks to the CRA and sponsors too&#8221;.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Check out Maxine and Rocky`s 2nd go run at the Finals as well as her run in the run off<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Maxine Day 2 CRA Finals.MOV\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9v84mOmvPy8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
