{"id":1429,"date":"2012-10-16T09:36:18","date_gmt":"2012-10-16T15:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rodeoclassifieds.com\/blog\/?p=1429"},"modified":"2012-10-16T10:17:01","modified_gmt":"2012-10-16T16:17:01","slug":"1429","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rodeoclassifieds.com\/blog\/1429\/","title":{"rendered":"Brook Roberston wins the 2012 Cowboy Classic FCA Barrel Racing Championship Finals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 57th Annual Foothills Cowboys Association Finals were held October 5-7th with 4 performances used to declare the finals champion.\u00a0 Each round paid 4 places, with the winner receiving $1000 for a round win.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Winning the average, the 2rd round plus 2 seconds and a 3rd was enough for Brook Robertson to come out the finals barrel racing champion.\u00a0 \u00a0 Brook finished 50 points ahead of season leader Bobbie Goodwin.<\/p>\n<p>We caught up with Brook to learn a little bit more about her success:<\/p>\n<p>-What is the name of the horse you are running?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">DBF Skipadash Jewel (Jewel)<\/span><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rodeoclassifieds.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/brookshorsejewel1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1437 alignleft\" style=\"margin: 2px; border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"jewel\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rodeoclassifieds.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/brookshorsejewel1-300x242.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.rodeoclassifieds.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/brookshorsejewel1-300x242.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.rodeoclassifieds.com\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/brookshorsejewel1.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>-How old is Jewel?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">She is 10<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-How long have you been running barrels on her?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Since March of 2011<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What is the training background on this horse?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Tanya Blacklaw trained her. She did a lot of different things with her. Rode pens at the auction market, cattle sorting etc.\u00a0 She didn&#8217;t limit her to barrel work.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>-What is your training and riding style with your horse?<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Jewel runs pretty straight. Not a bendy type horse. She also has a lot of rate so I have to ride pretty aggressive.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Even though she has a straighter style I spend a lot of time on suppling exercises because I still want her to be soft in her face \u00a0and soft in her ribcage. She has a tendency to get flat sometimes on her first so I school her with more shape then she would run with and really make her be soft in her body. I don&#8217;t give her much pocket when I work her but I do work her long to help keep her free and keep her feet moving.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>-What is it you like best about Jewel?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Her heart and her try.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-You won the FCA finals&#8230;. which run do you think was your best there and why ?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Our 2nd run was our best. It was fluid and smooth and was the fast time of the finals.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here is a look at that run:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TxgYJAKXhfo\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>-How do you prepare for your runs (warm up etc.)?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Our warm up is pretty simple. I long trot for a bit and only a few circles each way. I then do a little bit of suppling and then get off and stretch her. After that I just keep her walking and then visualize \u00a0my run a couple times and then get on about 5 out.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-What kind of saddle do you use?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Dee Butterfield flex tree<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>-What kind of pad do you use?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Dee Butterfield wool pad<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-What kind of bit do you use?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">I use a few. I ride her in a snaffle when doing dry work. I run her mostly in a medium shank gag Dee Butterfield bit made by Dave Elliot and School her sometimes in a long shank gag. I ran her in a long shank at the finals.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Are there any specific goals you set for yourself and your horse this season?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">My goal in the beginning was to just qualify for the finals. When it was going so well I had hoped for season leader but we ended up 2nd which was still pretty great! Winning the finals was the goal going into last weekend.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-What lead you to be a barrel racer?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>My mom is a breeder, trainer and competitor so it just happened. She hauled my pony to all the rodeos with us. I went through stages when I was younger when I didn&#8217;t want to do it but it never lasted long. I would always miss it too much.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>-If you were to share a training\/rodeo tip what would it be?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Put a good foundation on your horse before starting it on the barrels.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brook would like to send a special shout and out and thank you:<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Thank you to my friends and family who encouraged and supported me along the way.
