{"id":1503,"date":"2013-05-06T21:35:08","date_gmt":"2013-05-07T03:35:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rodeoclassifieds.com\/blog\/?p=1503"},"modified":"2013-05-06T21:35:08","modified_gmt":"2013-05-07T03:35:08","slug":"an-interview-with-2013-barrel-bash-short-go-champion-toni-dixon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rodeoclassifieds.com\/blog\/an-interview-with-2013-barrel-bash-short-go-champion-toni-dixon\/","title":{"rendered":"An Interview with 2013 Barrel Bash Short Go Champion Toni Dixon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Olds, Alberta was an exciting place to be the last weekend in April.\u00a0\u00a0 Barrel racers flocked to town for the 3rd Annual Barrel Bash where an Open, Youth and Slot race was held.\u00a0 The top 10 ten in the average over 2 long goes were brought back for a sudden death short go.\u00a0\u00a0 Toni Dixon and her horse Jig French Truckle were the short go winners.\u00a0\u00a0 Toni answered some of our questions about herself and her horse.<\/p>\n<p>-What is the name of the horse you are running?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Jig French Truckle, her barn name is \u201cMuffin\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>-How old is she?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">9 yr old sorrel mare, She is by a son of Frenchmans Guy out of a Bunny Bid,<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Truckle Feature mare.<\/span><br \/>\n-How long have you been running barrels on her?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">3 years<\/span><\/p>\n<p>-What is the training background on this horse?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">I bought her from Buffy Romeo as a 6 yr old. Buffy bought her as a 3 yr old from<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">Keisha in Nebraska. She took her to some Futurites and Derbies until I bought<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>-What is your training and riding style with your horse?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">I team rope, (heel), and breakaway a bit on her. I do very little barrel work with<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">her. If I am on the pattern I do slow work. I am a quiet rider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>-What is it you like best about her?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Her desire to please and her love to run barrels. She is deceptively fast because<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">she is so smooth and powerful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>-You won the Short Go, but was this your best run of the weekend?\u00a0 If not, which<br \/>\none was and why?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">My fastest time of the weekend was my short go run of 15.107<\/span><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Az14dz1zUf4?list=UUoRnKg3ViFQb69_LTdEVV4Q\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>-How do you prepare for your runs (warm up etc.)?\u00a0 Did you have to do anything<br \/>\ndifferent having to make more than one run in the same arena?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">I like to warm her up away from the action if I can. She worries when I am too<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">close to the in- gate so I don\u2019t go near it until her run. Once she is warmed up, I<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">like to keep her warm but calm. It was nice we had the opportunity to ride in the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">arena between go rounds. I moved to Alberta in 1983 and starting riding in a western<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">saddle. I learned to rope and cattle pen. When my second son was born, my<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">husband suggested I get into barrel racing which I did in 1988. I have been barrel<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">racing ever since. My husband, Howie and I bred, raised and raced running<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">Quarters Horses for 15 years. I have trained several running Quarter Horses to<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">run barrels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>-What do you do when you&#8217;re not barrel racing? (job, other interests etc).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">I am on the Board of Directors for the Calgary Stampede. I am a volunteer for the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">Canadian Cancer society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>-If you were to share a training\/rodeo tip what would it be?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">I feel it is important to do other things with your horses. Don\u2019t drill them too much<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #333399;\">on the pattern.
