Maple Creek, SK cowgirl Kerry Maynes returned to her home province the first weekend in October to claim the 2014 Manitoba Barrel Racing Association Open Championship.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The finals were held for the first time this year at the Westoba Agricultural Center of Excellence in Brandon, MB.\u00a0\u00a0 For many years, the finals were held in Hamiota, MB which was the small town Kerry grew up near.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 With the association growing in size, and a fantastic facility available to fill the need, the move was positive.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A great committee and crew, the finals were a huge success.<\/p>\n

Making jackpots and the finals of three provinces a priority this year, Kerry made her move in the MBRA short go to claim the championship at her last finals of the year. \u00a0 Her run was smooth, fast and one of those ones that makes it look “easy”.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Thank you Kerry for answering our questions and giving us some insight on your program.<\/p><\/div>\n

What is your horse’s registered and barn name?<\/p>\n

Registered Name: Bugs Easy Judge<\/span>Barn Name: Sid<\/span><\/span><\/span>-How long have you been running barrels on him\/her?<\/span>

\nThis is his 4th<\/sup> season barrel racing.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

-What is the training background on this horse?<\/span>
\n
\nI bought Sid in the fall of his three year old year from Rockin C Ranch in Lundbreck, AB, at the time I was riding another gelding out of the same mare and was after the similar bloodline. He has a few starts on the track during his two and three year old years. Since then I have done his barrel training myself, he went to a handful of futurities & derbies and has been to the CCA Finals in 2012 & 2013.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

– How would you describe this horse’s running style?<\/p>\n

He is quick footed and clocks great when he is smooth. He is not really either extreme of a free runner or push style, somewhere in the middle.<\/span>-What is it you like best about him\/her?<\/span><\/p>\n

His attitude. Barrel racing is easy for him and he likes his job.

\n– Your Short Go run was the quickest run of the weekend, what made it that much quicker than your other runs?<\/span><\/p>\n

The format for the weekend sets the short go up to be fast. The average is paid on the first two runs and that’s how you get to the short go. My game plan was to try to be penalty free and fast enough to make it to Sunday, then go for it.<\/span><\/p>\n

-How do you prepare for your runs (warm up etc.)?<\/span><\/p>\n

Try to be consistent enough to give him confidence going into different situations. With all the variables in barrel racing, I do my best to focus on the details I can control.<\/span><\/p>\n

-What kind of saddle do you use?<\/span><\/p>\n

For my runs in Brandon I used a Josey Start to Finish bit with a chain mouthpiece. Also run him in a couple different Dave Elliott bits.

\n -Are there any specific goals you set for yourself and your horse this season?<\/span><\/p>\n

For the first time in several years I haven’t focused on rodeo as much and have gone to more barrel races, the MBRA finals was the third barrel racing finals for the year, earlier in the summer we went to both the SBRA and ABRA finals. Happy to finish the year off with a win.<\/span><\/p>\n

-If you were to share a barrel racing tip what would it be?<\/p>\n

Put the time in, improving yourself or your horse.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

-What do you do when your aren’t barrel racing?<\/p>\n

Work full time for the credit union in Maple Creek, barrel racing consumes most of my spare time whether it be riding colts or heading to a barrel race or rodeo.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
