Re: Gelding colts

The last few years, we have been gelding our weanlings around the beginning of October, and then turning them back out with their dams for 10 days -2 weeks. They are totally healed, and don't seem to have near the stress as when we did them as a yearling in the spring. I have tracked their growth ag...

Re: Polo wraps V.S Smbs

There was an article about this topic in the Barrel Horse News a year or two ago?! Don't quote me, maybe look this up, but the general concensus was that polo wraps gave 10% support, whereas Sport Medicine Boots gave 25% - 30% support....they were hands down in favor of boots. Also , the possiblity ...

Re: Rancid

Anything dried is exactly that; dried!!! Some dried foods can keep up to 10 or 20 years! I would contact the producer before I threw out the product....you may be disposing of a feed that is totally fine....

Re: WPRA Dress Code Rule Change

I am glad that they are getting stricter again; I have seen some nice solid cuff and collar shirts without snaps or buttons, but on the other end of the spectrum, I have see ladies wearing waffle knit underwear shirts.....which were terrible and not very nice or professional.

Re: Salt Blocks

The Red Salt Blocks have Iodine Added, and is not recommended for horses unless you live in a soil zone that is deficient in Iodine. Horses can get toxic from too much Iodine. It is mainly made for cattle, who need more of it in their diet. We always have blue ones out all of the time.

Re: Barn Cat with Sniffles

I get the same thing in my barn and they get all better giving 1/2 cc of regular penicillin subq; just above the shoulder blades....I do this every three days, usually 2 treatments is all they need. Try this and see if it works; very cheap!

Re: lacerations, pepper, and wrapping...

I am currently using Healing Oil from Dr. Briggs' clinic; amazing stuff, put it on once a day, keeps flys and all bugs off, and is healing in beautifully. The cut is in the hocks, and deep enough that the tendon was exposed. This is the easiest treatment and least time consuming that I have found. C...

Re: SCRATCHES ON HIND FOOT / SWELLING

If the scratches are really bad, I have had the legs swell up. I found that if you take regular penicillin (the animal injection kind), and put it on and rub it in, that it clears them up right away. Not your usual kind of topical ointment, but it worked for me!
