Barrel Racers- Polos or SMB?

Postby Tys-ol-lady » Fri Sep 28, 2012 12:01 pm

I am teetering between polo wraps and sports medicine boots. For curiosity's sake, I would like to know what other people use and WHY?

I like polo's for the price (obviously), and because I feel like they are more supportive. I like that they dont usually end up with any dirt or sand under them, and that makes me think they might be a little more comfortable.

That being said, I like SMB's because they are so quick and easy! Quick to put on and take off, easy to clean etc. Also, I worry sometimes that I'm not putting even pressure on legs when Im wrapping with polo wraps.

I would love some input here!

Highly recommend Iconoclast Boots. With the Iconoclast boot you get full support under the fetlock, with little to no dirt getting in when fitted properly. Its not just a protective boot, its a support boot.
This boot has a double sling straps which bring the tendon back to center where it naturally belongs, giving your horse 360degrees of support vs an SMB boot with the fourth strap that goes under the fetlock or even a polo that just brings the tendon to the inside. The velcro on the boot is fantastic, the fit of the boot is excellent, & the boots are well made and last. You'll notice other boots look bulky compared to Iconoclast.

I also second Iconoclast Boots. I have sets for all my horses and I love them. They provide way more support that the SMB boots. AlsoI find that the legs stay clean and the boots do not usually get sand or dirt in them.

I agree with the Iconoclast boots, but I did find they wore out 2x as fast as the SMB Ventec. JMO

Any idea what size a 15.3-16 hh horse with pretty good bone would wear?

There is a sizing chart on the website that I've had really good luck with. I'm guessing probably an XL but measure your horse to be sure! Love these boots!!

Definitely take the time to measure both front and back on that horse.
Im gonna guess large in the fronts and xl in the back. BUT definitely measure so you get a proper fit! :-D

Measure the largest part of the ankle or fetlock.
Small: 9" and Under
Medium: 9-1/4" to 10-1/4"
Large: 10-1/2" to 11-1/2"
Extra Large: 11-1/2" to 12-1/2"
Extra, Extra Large: 12-1/2" to 13-1/2"
