Short Go Saddle from the Barrel Bash<\/p><\/div>\n

The 5th Annual Barrel Bash was held over the weekend of April 10-12 at the Calnash Ag Event Center in Ponoka, AB. \u00a0The entries were high and the payout was big. \u00a0 \u00a0There was a warm up race held Friday and the Barrel Bash runs on Saturday and Sunday. \u00a0Average times on two qualified riders for the short go where a saddle was first prize in each division. \u00a0 There was a hefty payout in each round. \u00a0On Saturday, the pace was set by Renee LeClercq and Flirt For A Diamond with a 17.332 for $1102.50 and on Sunday Traci MacDonald and Copy N Paradise set the pace with the quickest time of the weekend for $1390.20 for their 17.044.<\/p>\n

With the average times in place, riders came back to the short go with awesome prizes on the line. \u00a0 Marci Laye and Unleashed Ta Speed set the splits for the other divisions with a 17.166, second in the short go was another LDS Unleashed<\/a> offspring ridden by Kandi Horn. \u00a0Unleash Bently clocked in with a 17.193. \u00a0 \u00a0For complete event results check out the Barrel Bash facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We caught up with the Short Go Champion Marci Laye, to learn more about what makes this 1D saddle winning team tick.<\/p>\n

What is your horse’s registered and barn name?
\nUnleashed Ta Speed. Aka Speedy<\/span><\/p>\n

-How long have you been running barrels on her?
\nI started her on the pattern in the fall\u00a0of her 3 yr old year. I took her to the futurities last year as a five year old. This is her\u00a0first derby year.<\/span><\/p>\n

-What is the training background on this horse?
\nShe is home grown and so Billy started her\u00a0and after a couple of weeks I took over.<\/span><\/p>\n

– How would you describe this horse’s running style?
\nShe\u2019s a very big mare (16.1+) yet she\u00a0turns very tight and bendy. People are always surprised when they stand next to her,\u00a0because she can turn like a small horse, they don\u2019t realize how big she is watching her.\u00a0She’s got a very big stride and is super turny.<\/span><\/p>\n

-What is it you like best about him\/her?
\nShe just fits me! It\u2019s like she\u2019s an extension to my\u00a0body, we just really mesh. She\u2019s also a real people horse and has a real kind, goofiness\u00a0about her that always makes me smile.<\/span><\/p>\n

– Which run at the Barrel Bash stands out as your favorite and why?<\/p>\n

I was real happy with all\u00a0my runs, as each one got faster. But my last one really sticks out. My friend Kandi Horn\u00a0had run a 17.193 before me on one of our studs colts, Unleash Bentley and I had\u00a0texted Billy to tell how excited I was for her! I really didn\u2019t see me outrunning her, but\u00a0told myself to get real committed on my run and see if I could improve on my last run.\u00a0Speedy\u2019s second barrel was crazy tight and fast! She felt the best she\u2019s felt in a long\u00a0time!<\/span><\/p>\n

-How do you prepare for your runs with this horse (warm up etc.)?
\nShe can get caught up in\u00a0the action, so I long trot her outside away from everyone. Then I hand walk her for\u00a0about 10-15 minutes prior to my runs.<\/span><\/p>\n

-What are your plans for the rest of the year with this horse?
\nThis is her first derby year and\u00a0I have two other derby horses, so I\u2019ll hit as many derbies as I can. I also feel that it\u2019s\u00a0time to introduce both Speedy and my other Unleashed filly, Hopes Unleashed to the\u00a0rodeo world.<\/span><\/p>\n

What kind of saddle do you use?
\nOn Speedy I use a Raylee Racer and on Hope a Frontier.<\/span><\/p>\n

-What kind of pad do you use?
\nSMX Air Ride Pads, by Professional Choice<\/span><\/p>\n

-What kind of bit do you use?
\nOn Speedy a Carol Goosetree, Double Gag Dr. Bristol long\u00a0shank<\/span><\/p>\n

– What kind of products, therapies and\/or supplements do you use to maintain your horse\u00a0throughout the year?
\nBOT products, soft ride boots, Sharp Edge Products (mare mix)\u00a0Equitop Myoplast, and Seabuck Equine<\/span><\/p>\n

-What was your goal and focus heading into the weekend?
\nWe had Ian Zoerb put some new\u00a0shoes on Speedy and make some slight changes, so I was hoping to see a marked\u00a0improvement in her. I\u2019m thrilled to say that Ian made a huge difference!<\/span><\/p>\n

-If you were to share a barrel racing tip what would it be?
\nBe consistent! There\u2019s no right or\u00a0wrong style, so find one that fits your style of riding and stick to it. My favorite saying\u00a0is \u201cPatience is not about doing nothing. Patience is about doing everything you can.\u00a0But being patient about the results.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

-What do you do when your aren’t barrel racing?
\nRunning our breeding program, looking\u00a0after the books to our water truck business and the best job\u2026.. being a grandma to our\u00a0baby granddaughter Karsyn!<\/span><\/p>\n
