Animal Health Care Controversy

The following is an article written by Sonja Christopher of the Health, Harmony, and Horses Conference. Happy Reading, Shorty The Controversy Over Animal Health Care “… mostly just plain Bullshit.” These are the words Ivor Clark used in his colorful complaint letter about Mr. Pequin, an equine denti...

I haven't heard anything from the AVMA since the Alberta Beef Producers letter came out. It is too bad that Dr. Buote isn't sharing anymore; it would be interesting to hear his remarks on the ABP letter. I believe that the proposed amendments will go before the Alberta Legislature in 2006. It will b...

I had posted a document that was a reply to Adrian Pritchard (Manager of Professions & Occupations) about the proposed changes to the Alberta Vet Act. There was some concern from people in the veterinary community that it was defamatory to veterinarians in general. That was not the intention of ...

Hi Jo, Thank You for your post. I am not very familiar with the Manitoba Vet Act, you may want to research it a little further. You might look at the exemptions in section 3(2), (f). I find it interesting that you said you can't find an equine chiropractor out there. It is not surprising to me becau...

Did anyone get a chance to read the Alberta Beef Producers letter? Comments? Questions? Concerns?
Dr. Buote, are you there? I would really like to hear your comments as well.
I look forward to more dialogue on this issue.
Best Regards, :)

Here is a link to the Alberta Beef Producers website that has a letter to Adrian Pritchard (Manager of Professions and Occupations, who is handling the changes to the Vet Act). Read it and compare it to the letter that Dr. Buote posted from the President of the AVMA. http://www.albertabeef.org/pdf/v...

Question: Example one: Present Day: Horseowner hires individual (non vet) to help thier animal with one of the things mentioned - chiro, dentist, etc. Person leads horseowner to believe they are qualified. Person makes situation worse. What recourse does Horse Owner have? Example two: Present Day: ...

Wow, excellent dialogue! I am glad that someone else is expressing their views, Thank You. This issue isn't only about equine dentistry; it is about animal owner's rights to choose who works on their animals. If the proposed changes go through the way they are written, it will in effect change to wh...

You are Welcome Sharon, I strongly feel that Alberta animal owners need to be aware of this issue as it has the potential to affect them drastically. I also totally agree with Randa, it should be up to the individual to choose who they have work on their animals, and that is exactly what they have t...

Thank You Dr. Buote, for your response. Let me refer to your comment about where the courts have said that the AVMA's definition of Veterinary Medicine is Flawed. ".... Anything which is not clearly prohibited may be done with impunity by anyone not a member of these closed associations." How does t...

Then the courts say (have said) our definition of what constitutes veterinary medicine is flawed, and here we are, trying to amend it. Here is a link to the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench written judgment: http://www.equinedental.com/l06-cruling.htm Dr. Buote, could you show me anywhere where the c...

I believe that the proposed amendments will in effect make veterinarians the sole providers of MOST health care for animals in Alberta. I agree with Dr. Buote that the: (a) AHTs under a vet's supervision, (b)a horseshoer, (c)an animal owner or their employee, (d)ranchers helping each other, (e) an a...

Changes to the Vet Act in Alberta

The Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has put forth proposed amendments to the Veterinary Practice Act that if accepted will change the definition of Veterinary Medicine. The proposed changes will give control (monopoly) to the AVMA over ALL aspects of animal health care. As animal owner...

Equine Dentistry

I would like to address this topic as a person who has been involved with equine dentistry for over 11 years. I practice dentistry in Alberta and I work in conjunction with veterinarians. There recently was a political struggle in Alberta between the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association and equine...
